Great Falls Gallery This is a collection of oil and acrylic paintings of Great Falls on the Potomac a few miles from Washington DC. They are painted from both the Virginia and the Maryland sides, some are "plein Air" painted on site and others are studio paintings inspired by on site sketches or photos. Great Falls are truly spectacular especially when we have rain storms. Its hard to believe we are so close to the nations capital. The C&O canal runs parallel to the falls on the Maryland side. It was built to provide a link to the Ohio River from the Potomac where it begins in Georgetown. However it was never finished all the way, because the B&O railroad from Baltimore was finished first and established Baltimore as the premier port on the Chesapeake Bay linking it with the rich farmlands of Ohio. On the Virginia side are the remnants of the "Potowmac" Canal, which was a much earlier attempt to make a navigation channel around the Falls. I have painted this canal many times as in "Falls Creek" |
