C&O Canal at Georgetown Oil painting by Richard Whiteley This is a studio picture done from a plein air painting that I painted on the bank of the canal. The C&O Canal was intended to link the Chesapeake bay to Ohio via the Potomac and Ohio Rivers. It was not finished because the B&O Railway from Baltimore beat them to it. However it is well preserved and you can walk a trail along almost the entire length up to the Allegany mountains. This was an early spring day and there was still some ice in the water. I was attracted by the way I could nest the bridges together in the composition.
